Study in UK - Universities

University of North Umbria

Laurentian University

Northumbria University in Newcastle Upon Tyne is one of Britain's biggest universities. In the most recent assessment of research quality, it recorded the most substantial improvement of any institution in the north of England - much of the university's work was judged world-leading and its research internationally excellent. Northumbria has invested £136m in its city-centre campus and is attracting more students every year (they currently number a whopping 40,000) - no surprise when you consider it is based in a city renowned for its culture, friendliness and nightlife. The university has two campuses in Newcastle upon Tyne: City campus is located in the heart of the city - ideal for sampling that legendary Newcastle nightlife - and Coach Lane campus is three miles from the city centre in the leafy suburbs of Newcastle.

University of Bedfordshire

Laurentian University

The University has a growing global reputation. The number of applications to the University has nearly doubled in two years (UCAS) and our popularity makes us the most ‘upwardly mobile' university in the country according to the Times Higher Education.

This year alone our UCAS applications were up 54.5 per cent, plus the total number of international students taught on our UK campuses has more than doubled.

We maintain an excellent academic reputation high-quality teaching, academic support and personal development were just some of the University's key strengths to come out of the National Student Survey 2010, with a number of courses scoring 100 per cent on a number of aspects related to quality of teaching.

What's more, the University of Bedfordshire has been awarded top marks a ‘confidence' rating in a recent Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) audit 2009, which checks how UK universities maintain their own academic standards and quality.

We have just opened a new, state-of-the-art 34m Campus Centre, as part of a major 89m redevelopment project to enhance our Luton campus. This massive investment will also include the building of brand-new 40m en-suite student halls located on campus, on track for completion in 2011-12, and a new 15m Postgraduate and Continuous Professional Development Centre, scheduled to be ready in 2013.

To top it all, we have also completed a 51m investment in our campuses over the past four years, and were delighted when His Royal Highness, the Earl of Wessex, opened the new facilities at our Bedford campus.

These include a 6m Campus Centre which houses a 4.5m 280-seat theatre, and an 8m Physical Education and Sport Science Centre which will be used to support 2012 Olympic athletes. See our Bedford campus launch brochure for further details.

Our Luton campus has seen a total of 1.4m ploughed into our business facilities including a new Law Moot Court and unique 'Business Pods', and 12m which is being invested in our Media and Computing facilities. We have also spent 1.5m on an award-winning new site for healthcare students at Butterfield Park, Luton and at Oxford House, Aylesbury.

In the Government's recent UK-wide Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008, much of our research was described as 'world-leading' and of 'international significance'. As a consequence, our research funding more than doubled.

We were awarded a 1.1m grant and have set up a major centre for social work research, the Tilda Goldberg Centre, in addition to our nine Research Institutes.

We work closely with employers on our curriculum whilst forging close links with more than 5,500 UK companies to provide a broad range of training and industry accredited courses.

We are proud of our excellent track record on employability, with 92 per cent of graduates in work and/or further study within six months of graduation (Destination of Leavers from Higher Education 2009).

The University continues to value diversity and takes pride in its student-centred learning experience. We stand for high-quality teaching, outstanding student support and excellent personal, career and professional development.

University of Sussex

Laurentian University

The University of Sussex was the first of the new wave of universities founded in the 1960s, receiving its Royal Charter in August 1961. Nearly 50 years on, the University has become a leading teaching and research institution.

In the 2010 Times Higher Education magazine's World University Rankings, Sussex is ranked 8th in the UK, 16th in Europe and 79th in the world, setting us alongside some of the world's most prestigious institutions.

Innovative research and scholarship
Sussex is a leading research university, as reflected in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. Over 90 per cent of Sussex research activity was rated as world leading, internationally excellent or internationally recognised, confirming the University among the leading 30 research universities in the UK, on a simple average across all scores. 18 subjects rank in the top 20 for research in the UK, across the arts, sciences and social sciences, with American studies ranked number 1 in the UK, Politics number 2, and Art history number 3.

Teaching and learning
The University of Sussex has over 10,000 students, of which almost 3,000 are postgraduates. Creative thinking, pedagogic diversity, intellectual challenge and interdisciplinarity have always been fundamental to a Sussex education.

Our goal is to deliver teaching and learning programmes that are informed by current research, are attractive to students from all socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, and which deliver skills for life.

We are currently expanding our degree programmes in popular areas such as biomedical science, business and management, digital media, international security, modern languages, and science and enterprise.

Our staff
Sussex has developed a reputation for innovation and inspiration, and attracts leading thinkers and researchers. We have over 2,200 staff, including around 550 teaching faculty, and 280 research faculty. We have counted three Nobel Prize winners, 13 Fellows of the Royal Society, six Fellows of the British Academy and a winner of the prestigious Crafoord Prize on our faculty.

International Sussex
From its foundation, Sussex has had an international perspective to its academic activities and its outlook. The University attracts staff and students to its campus from over 120 different countries across the world. Nearly a third of staff come from outside the UK.

Our research tackles major world issues, with leading areas of expertise such as climate change and development studies. The University has extensive links with many institutions worldwide, such as Peking University, National Taiwan University and the Harvard-Sussex programme.

Campus life
Sussex has one of the most beautiful campus locations in Britain. Situated in rolling parkland on the edge of Brighton, the campus combines award-winning architecture with green open spaces. The campus is surrounded by the South Downs National Park, but just a few minutes away from the lively city of Brighton and Hove.

Designed by Sir Basil Spence, the buildings that make up the heart of the campus were given listed building status in 1993. Falmer House is one of only two educational buildings in the UK to be Grade I listed in recognition of its exceptional interest.

Business and the community
Sussex has a long tradition of engaging with business and the community, which continues today through activities such as the Sussex Innovation Centre, public lectures and service to the community. Our goal is to help businesses and organisations in the region develop higher staff skill levels through training, and to stimulate innovation through partnership with other institutions outside Sussex to benefit the wider society.

The Sussex Innovation Centre provides support for the creation and growth of technology- and knowledge-based companies in Sussex. The Centre is now a thriving business environment for nearly 80 high-growth companies. Since its creation over 160 companies have been based at the Centre; their cumulative revenue is now over 250 million and the companies currently employ many hundreds of people in the local area.
